The Difficult Words Of Jesus – Book Review

The Difficult Words Of Jesus – Book Review

When you ask the average person what they think about the Bible and the things that Jesus taught, they often respond with relatively positive answers like “He was a good teacher”, “He was a good role model”, and “He tried to make a difference in people’s lives.” When they actually begin to read the Gospels for themselves, however, they are often surprised to learn that many of the things that Jesus spoke of were confusing and difficult to hear.

We’re not talking merely about things that are difficult to comprehend because of differences between the cultural and historical context in which our lives and Jesus’ lives existed. No, we’re talking about things that – once understood – are often hard to wrap our heads around because the teachings of Jesus often contradict our beliefs and our ways of interacting with the world around us.

If you’ve ever encountered that type of dichotomy in your reading of the biblical texts, then The Difficult Words Of Jesus by Amy-Jill Levine is for you. In her latest book, Dr. Levine – a Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School and College of Arts and Sciences – explores how some of the most inflammatory and un-politically correct teachings of Jesus would have been received by the people who first heard them, how they have understood them over time, and how they might be interpreted today, in the context of the Gospel of love and reconciliation.

The Difficult Words Of Jesus is divided into six chapters that cover the following teachings:

  • Selling your belongings and giving to the poor (Luke 18:22)
  • Hating members of your own families (Luke 14:26)
  • Acting as if they were slaves (Matthew 20:27)
  • Restricting their mission (Matthew 10:6)
  • Speaking of Judgement and Damnation (Matthew 8:12)
  • Calling His people devil’s children (John 8:44)

If you have struggled to understand what these difficult sayings mean, then give The Difficult Words Of Jesus a read. Dr. Levine’s explanation might just help bring the words of Jesus into better focus for you.
