How A Season Of Change Led To A Deeper Understanding Of Communion
Have you ever walked through a season where something you once took for granted suddenly became deeply significant?
That happened to me during the pandemic.
When churches across California closed their doors, many of the familiar rhythms of life changed overnight. Since churches were closed, worship services aired on YouTube. Small groups connected on Zoom. And communion became something we were encouraged to partake of in our homes.
During that time, I found myself thinking more deeply about what communion really is and why it matters so much.
I found myself coming back again and again to the words of Jesus:
“Do this in remembrance of Me.” – Luke 22:19 NKJV
And as I sat with that verse and spent time in Scripture, I began to see communion in a deeper and more personal way.
Communion is not simply about where it takes place. It is about remembering Christ. It is about pausing to reflect on His sacrifice, His love, and all that He accomplished for us through the cross.
During that season, I began taking communion at home.
At first, it felt different from what I had always known. Communion had always been something connected to church services and corporate worship. But over time, I came to appreciate the quietness of it.
There was something deeply meaningful about setting aside intentional time to focus on the Lord without distraction.
Since then, I have come to see that communion at home can be a beautiful option in many different seasons:
- It can be a wonderful way to draw near to God in a more intentional way.
- It can be especially meaningful when you are unable to attend church due to illness or other circumstances.
- It can bless and spiritually bond your family, small group and home church.
Of course, one of the things I realized fairly quickly is that while the desire to take communion at home was there, the practical side of it wasn’t always as simple.
I couldn’t help but wonder, “What do you use for communion elements when you’re at home?”
I wanted communion to feel meaningful and – quite frankly – gathering bread and crackers didn’t feel as reverent as I had hoped.
Introducing World Communion Cups
If you too are looking for a convenient yet reverent way to celebrate communion at home, I’d like to introduce you to World Communion Cups.
While this organization has served churches for over 40 years, they also recognize that communion doesn’t just take place in large congregational settings. We also remember Christ’s sacrifice in our living rooms… around kitchen tables… in Bible studies… during prayer gatherings… and even at people’s bedsides.
In these moments, having something simple and ready to use makes a real difference – so they offer three styles of products – Chalice, Simply and Elements – that enable you to choose the best option for your setting.
Each product consists of 25-count bags of prefilled communion cups with different bread options (including unleavened bread and wheat wafers, regular and gluten-free choices). Everything is baked fresh in-house, which reflects a level of care and consistency that I always value.
What I appreciate most is how these help remove the practical barriers, so the focus can remain where it belongs.
Final Thoughts
For me, what began during a difficult and uncertain season has now become a quiet and meaningful rhythm – one that continues to draw my heart back to Him.
If you’ve never considered taking communion at home, or if you’ve been looking for a simple way to make it more meaningful in your daily life or small gatherings, this is definitely a resource worth exploring.
Because in the end, communion is not about where we take it.
It’s about who we remember and why it matters.
