Happy Hormones, Slim Belly – Book Review
If you are a woman who has reached a certain point in your life, you’ve probably discovered that gaining weight is easier than it once was, and losing weight is more difficult than ever before.
“It truly isn’t your fault!” proclaims Jorge Cruise – the best-selling author of 19 weight loss books, including Happy Hormones, Slim Belly, a guide written for women over 40. According to Jorge, not only have women been following misguided weight loss advice all of their lives – advice that clearly does not work – but “any woman who has ever cut calories or followed a starvation weight-loss diet has a 87 percent chance of suffering from a broken metabolism, making weight loss after 40 nearly impossible.”
Think that’s bad? The situation gets worse.
Jorge says that the key to weight loss is “to keep insulin low by avoiding hidden sugars and cutting carbs.” However, women over 40 crave carbs – known as “sugar calories” in Jorge’s world – to compensate for the loss of serotonin due to hormonal changes in their body, which often leads to a vicious cycle of weight gain.
To address this issue – a woman’s need to simultaneously reduce carbs in order to lose weight, and to eat carbs in order to correct low serotonin levels – Jorge has devised a dietary plan called Carb Cycling, which is what he introduces in Happy Hormones, Slim Belly.
Carb Cycling consists of 2 Slim Days and 5 Happy Days of Menus (his words, not mine!) in which you focus on eating meals rich in protein, healthy fats, and vegetables for two consecutive days each week – and then you eat up to 500 Sugar Calories a day for up to 5 days in a row. Note that you are counting Sugar Calories (carbs) – not Food Calories – on Jorge’s plan. Also, Jorge offers a few variations of this basic plan to help you customize it to your needs.
Here is a further breakdown of Happy Hormones, Slim Belly:
Chapters One through Three of the book describe the reasons why women have difficulty losing weight – the science and rationale behind this diet plan – and all sorts of interesting information about the history of dieting and diet research.
Chapter Four describes the Carb Cycling Plan and is packed with Shopping Lists and Meal Plans. The menus look much more satisfying than many other diet plans I’ve seen.
Chapter Five contains the Recipes. Most of the Recipes contain full color photographs, along with Quick Tips and Sugar and Calorie Counts. The Recipes look really delicious – I don’t think you’d go hungry on this plan!
Chapters Six through Nine contain information that will help you achieve success Week 5 and Beyond, Food Lists, Workout Information and Frequently Asked Questions.
What I liked about Happy Hormones, Slim Belly is that the book contains a lot of relevant information that will interest to Jorge’s target audience. The menu plans, shopping lists, and reference materials are extremely helpful. The recipes look easy to make, delicious, and satisfying.
I reviewed the hardback version of Happy Hormones, Slim Belly, and recommend it over the Kindle version due to the readability issues a number of Amazon reviewers experienced.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 Stars.

My problem with weight came when I had to take hormones. Four years now, and 7 to 10 lbs a year. I always watched my carbs and sugar, exercised regularly. Now nothing works. Hormones really do throw us out of balance.
I’ll have to take a closer look at this book.

Isn’t it terrible how many things can affect your weight? Hormones, illness, meds, hidden food allergies…
I haven’t had the chance to personally try out this book yet – it’s been a trying month – but I do hope to apply some of the info in the book and see where it takes me!
Best of luck to you Donna in your pursuit for better health! 🙂
Ok this looks amazing. Thank you for such and great review with lots of info! I will be looking for this book because I am approaching 40 soon!
hmmmm…I’d be willing to give this plan a try. Sounds easy enough. I lost a lot of weight on South Beach about 10 years ago, but I’ve gained it back plus more and it’s been extremely difficult to get it off no matter what I try. I can lose 10 pounds, but then I stall. Irritating to have to go to so much trouble just to maintain an overweight frame 🙁
