I’m Happy For You – Book Review

Do you struggle with OCD – Obsessive Comparison Disorder? That’s the term that blogger-turned-author Kay Wills Wyma has coined to describe our compulsion to constantly compare ourselves to others – a compulsion, she says, that produces unwanted thoughts and feelings that drive us into depression, consumption, anxiety and all-around discontent.

Comparison, says author Paul Angone, is “the smallpox of our [the Millennial] generation” – but really, I think it’s part of the human condition.

That’s why Kay has written I’m Happy For You (Sort Of…Not Really) – Finding Contentment In A Culture Of Comparison. In this book, Kay explores the many ways our culture fosters an environment of competitiveness and comparison, and shows how we can break this destructive cycle in our lives by becoming more aware of our attitudes and behaviors, practicing gratitude and learning to be content.

Kay shares her personal experiences and uses biblical examples to show how we can escape the trap of comparing ourselves to others and trying to find contentment in the face of everyone else’s seemingly perfect lives.

Here are a few of the topics that Kay discusses in I’m Happy For You:

  • Calling out Obsessive Comparison Disorder in our lives
  • How taking a long view of life changes everything
  • The struggle to keep up appearances in an on-display world
  • Why we’ll never measure up…and why we don’t need to
  • How to stake our claim in the land of contentment

I found I’m Happy For You quite insightful and the discussion questions at the end of the book thought-provoking, whether you read through the book on your own or with a group.

I’m Happy For You has something to offer everyone. Keep reading for information on how you can win a copy of this book!

  1. Anne says:

I have never been compared to anyone since each individual is unique and to compare someone to another person is unfair and hurtful. Each of us is given different characteristics and abilities.

  2. Bethany says:

It’s definitely made it harder for me to be accepting of myself.

What a great title! I actually started my blog as my way to break my Obsessive Comparison Disorder tendencies. I compared myself with Rheumatoid arthritis to those “supermoms” who do not have it. An unfair comparison that led to very bad depression and bad thoughts. Stopping by from Mommy Monday but hope you linked up with us at Small Victories Sunday Linkup too 🙂

  4. Sounds like an important — but very uncomfortable — book!

  5. I’ve found this one of the hardest things to overcome. Especially among writers. I find the more I can be happy for other’s successes, and give my own longings to God, the better I am about (not) comparing. Thanks for this review! Sounds like a needed book.

  6. Carl says:

It’s difficult thing for anyone. I find that the worst thing for me is comparing my “out-takes” against someone else’s “highlight reel”. You can never win that one. We’re better off with that kind of comparison anyway.

Comparison is a funny thing that seems to happen when we try to identify with others. And I think we have all done it sometime in our lives, probably more than we may think.

I have Tweeted, and Pinned, liked on FB.

  8. That title cracks me up. Sounds like a good read. Thanks for the giveaway. I’m sharing on Twitter.

  9. Mary Denman says:

Sadly, I compare my weaknesses to other women’s strengths. But as a photographer, I’ve started to see how detrimental that is to other women who do the same thing. It’s a battle worth fighting…to accept who God made us to be! Not to try and be someone else!

Thanks for sharing about this book Ramona!
