Breaking Busy – How To Find Peace And Purpose In A World Of Crazy by Alli Worthington – Book Review
How busy are you?
Do you spend your days constantly racing from one task to the next, trying to squeeze “just one more thing” into your already over-crowded schedule?
Do you wear your busyness like a badge of honor, believing that idle hands are the work of the devil?
Are you so busy being busy that, perhaps, you are missing out on God’s purpose and plans for your life?
In Alli Worthington’s new book, Breaking Busy – How To Find Peace & Purpose In A World Of Crazy, Alli challenges the mindset that so many of us were raised on – that we must be all things to all people at all times – that leads us to compulsively drive ourselves to exhaustion.
According to a survey published by USA Today, 69 percent of people polled said they were “busy” or “very busy” – and women between the ages of 30 and 60 were the busiest, reporting that they regularly sacrificed sleep, recreation, hobbies and family time due to their hectic schedules.
Crazy busy is a life without peace. It’s marked by decisions made for the approval of the world, not the approval of God. It’s filled with what we think we “should” do, what we think will make others happy, and what we think being a good person (or good girl) looks like. All this busyness, in the end, keeps us just out of reach of the life we were created to live.
Just as our smartphones have limited capacity – so do we! Alli says we will know when we are reaching our limits when we start experiencing these signs of capacity overload:
- We are unable to control our emotions.
- We stop caring for ourselves.
- We constantly become ill.
- We are chronically late.
- We self-medicate and show signs of excess behavior.
- We neglect important relationships.
- We neglect God.
It’s important to recognize that during different times in our lives, our capacity to handle different loads will vary. Alli says we should look for the following factors, which will impact the capacity of what we can handle in any given moment:
- Identify your season in life.
- Identify your stress points.
- Identify why you are exceeding your capacity.
Breaking Busy is full of practical tips gleaned from real-life, personal experience and biblical wisdom from beloved characters including Moses and Martha on how to recharge our batteries, how to say no to others, and how to live life in our sweet spot.
If you are among the 69 percent of the population who counts themselves among the “busy” or “very busy” – make it a priority to buy and read this book!
If you are among the 31 percent who are living life in a slower lane – do an overwhelmed friend a favor and help them “break busy”!
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
