Hope Prevails – Insights From A Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression – Book Review
Did you know that in any given year, approximately 18.8 million American adults will suffer from a depressive order – and, that at some point in their lives, 1 in 4 Americans will experience depression?
That means, chances are high that someone you know and love – perhaps you, yourself – have experienced the debilitating effects of depression.
For nearly twenty years, Dr. Michelle Bengtson – a board-certified neuropsychologist with lots of degrees and alphabet soup after her name – spent her career working with individuals who were suffering from depression. She prescribed every type of traditional treatment possible to her patients, including medication, therapy, exercise and good nutrition.
Imagine how she must have felt when she found that all of her knowledge, medical training and experience did not make her immune from experiencing the depths of depression herself – and that all of the traditional treatments she prescribed to her patients were not enough to heal her of depression on its own.
Hope Prevails – Insights From A Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression is the result of Dr. Michelle’s life-changing and eye-opening first-hand experience with depression.
It’s a book that everyone should read.
In a highly conversational tone, Dr. Michele helps us to understand that we are not alone in our depression. She helps us to identify and understand the underlying causes of depression with an emphasis on the spiritual roots of depression and the specific steps we need to take to overcome them.
Since the roots of many illnesses are spiritual in origin, but most doctors are trained to only treat the symptoms, the material in Hope Prevails is invaluable.
This is what Dr. Michelle says about her book:
Few books discuss what depression does to us on a personal level. That is the emphasis of this book. While I will address what depression is, where it comes from, and ways to treat it, I will also share what it does to us spiritually and how that perpetuates the problem.
Not until I realized how depression is perpetuated on a spiritual level and addressed the spiritual issues did I start to walk out of the valley.
I’ve been reading Dr. Michelle’s blog for a number of years – she regularly contributes to my Inspire Me Monday column – and I respect her as a doctor who is highly knowledgeable in her field and a woman who is solidly grounded in God’s Word.
If you are looking for a book that can help you to re-experience hope and joy, even though you may be currently walking through a dark valley, I highly recommend Hope Prevails to you!
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
